Why he coaches, in his words

“I toyed with the idea of becoming a certified leadership coach a few years ago, but chose not to pursue it. In 2025, a friend noticed that I was a naturally curious person who asked good questions, and he challenged me to re-consider coaching.”

“I took that to heart, became a certified coach (ACC) through the International Coaching Federation, and I’ve never looked back. I’m still curious; I still work hard to ask the next best question, and I care deeply for the people I work with and want the best for them.”

The career behind the coaching

Matt spent over thirty years in Christian schools across British Columbia and Montana, working his way from teacher to assistant principal to principal. He knows what it is like to carry a school: parents, board meetings, staff conflicts, budgets, and the students at the centre of all of it.

In 2020 he joined Dordt University, where he teaches in the undergraduate and graduate education programs and directs the Master of Education and school leadership programs. In 2024 he gave Dordt’s commencement address, “Be Thou My Vision: Seeing Through the Eyes of the Heart.” He writes and speaks on school leadership, school culture, teacher wellness, and where faith and learning meet.

Four and a half years of hallway conversations

From 2021 to 2025 Matt co-hosted Hallway Conversations with Dr. Dave Mulder and Dr. Abby DeGroot, a podcast for Christian educators thinking out loud about their work. He recorded around 125 episodes with them before stepping away in late 2025 to make room for other things. The episodes are still up, and they are the closest thing to sitting in on the way he asks questions.

Outside of work

In his own words: “I am a long-suffering Vancouver Canucks hockey fan who also enjoys road-tripping, sitting around a campfire, going for long walks and prairie hikes, being with my family, drinking coffee, and imagining possibilities.”
